It was such an honour to win the Junior AIMES Award for Service to the Community last year and since that time my life has been super busy. At the end of 2015 I was recognised at my school by winning the award for Outstanding Leadership in the School Community. Early this year I was honoured to be voted in as one of two boy School Leaders for Murrays Bay Intermediate School (with a student population of almost 1100). I love my varied roles within the school as a leader and the opportunity to create my own projects. I am currently developing a brand new initiative at the school – A Diversity Group that recognises and celebrates the diversity that makes up Murrays Bay Intermediate School.
I continue to be busy with my ambassador role with Achilles International New Zealand. Late last year I travelled to Wellington to speak to hundreds of school kids participating in a fun run and earlier this year I represented Achilles at the Wellington Round the Bays.
My sports are going really well. I compete in monthly swim meets and this year I got to compete at the Auckland Intermediate Schools Swim Champs and the Northern Zone Junior Swim Champs, as one of their very first para-swimmers. Since winning my Junior AIMES award I have also participated in 4 more Weet-Bix Tryathlons having completed seventeen in total. I have recently been selected as one in five kids who will have their photo and story appear on the Weet-Bix cereal boxes later this year. I continue to play wheelchair basketball and our team have won two tournaments this season so far; we have visited a couple of schools teaching students how to play the game; and last season I was awarded Most Improved Player for my club.
I love the opportunities to act and so far, this year I have had a small part in a feature film and a great role in my school’s production of Peter Pan. I continue to perform with my school’s Kapa Haka group.
With my passion for speaking, I have had more opportunities this year, mainly through school and my ambassador roles. Recently I was invited to Kristin School as a guest speaker at their Year 7 Assembly and spoke about overcoming challenges to achievement. Developing my story and my message has been an ongoing process and I’ve had the amazing support and advice from my mentor Cam Calkoen (North Harbour Club Ambassador). I look forward to more speaking opportunities through 2016.
